REFERENCE BIBLE VERSES

‭‭Luke‬ ‭2‬:‭29‬-‭32‬ ‭NIV‬‬ | Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.

‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭27‬ ‭NIV‬‬ | Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

OBJECTIVES

To understand that the peace that surpasses all understanding is more than the absence of problems.

To rest in the deep sense of wholeness, contentment, and settled confidence that comes from knowing God is faithful and our lives are safely held in His hands.

Simeon’s Peace Came From A Fulfilled Promise

  • Luke portrays Simeon as exemplary in the way he read and reflected upon the Old Testament. This devout and righteous man was waiting in Jerusalem, longing expectantly for Scripture’s fulfillment. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him (v. 25).
  • Simeon’s hope is realized at this marvelous, pivotal moment in Simeon’s life, in Luke’s Gospel, and in human history. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death until he first saw the Lord’s Christ, the Messiah (v. 26). Shaped by Scripture, the perspective Simeon represents does not only look retrospectively at the long-awaited hope that he is seeing realized in this moment. It also looks forward to what will come. Simeon blesses Mary and Joseph and says to Mary, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel” (v. 34).
  • Simeon had enough intimacy with God to recognize the fulfillment of a promise even when it didn’t look like what people expected. Though he waited and waited, His answer may have come differently than he had expected, for it came in the form of a baby, but he had been watching for it and knew the answer when it came. His peace didn’t come from controlling the outcome. His peace came from trusting the One who made the promise.
  • When we wait with full expectancy, we can expect our deliverance to come. What’s more, we can trust that we will recognize it when it does come; we also trust that we will have the faith to believe what he reveals to us. We must wait expectantly and believe for the revelation to receive it when it comes.
  • Simeon allowed the Holy Spirit to work in his life. The Spirit of God was on him and revealed a specific purpose for his life. He then allowed the Spirit to move him so that he was in the right place at the right time. Simeon was submitted to the Holy Spirit.

Shalom is More Than “Everything is Okay”

  • Biblical peace isn’t “Nothing bad is happening,” but it’s “Even when things aren’t perfect, I am secure in God”. Peace can exist before everything is resolved, because peace is not primarily about our circumstances. It’s about where our confidence rests.
  • This connects beautifully with John 14:27, Jesus says: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” The peace Jesus gives doesn’t necessarily remove uncertainty, waiting, grief, difficult circumstances, or unanswered questions, but His peace gives us a different posture in the middle of them.
  • Simeon says: “Now I can depart in peace,” and Jesus: “My peace I give you.” Simeon received peace because he saw Jesus. We receive peace because we know Jesus. The peace Jesus gives is not dependent on whether the future looks predictable. It is rooted in His presence.
  • Shalom is not the confidence that everything will happen the way I want. It is the confidence that whatever happens, we can say, “I am held by God.”

CONCLUSION

Simeon’s story reminds us that true peace comes from trusting God’s promises, not controlling outcomes. Through intimacy with God and submission to the Holy Spirit, he recognized Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promise. Likewise, we are called to wait expectantly and remain attentive to God’s leading. Biblical peace does not mean life is free from uncertainty, but that our confidence rests in God’s presence and faithfulness. We may not know what the future holds, but because we know Jesus, we can rest in the assurance that we are held by God.

REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • Simeon waited a long time before seeing God’s promise fulfilled. How can we maintain peace during seasons of waiting?
  • Is your peace currently dependent on something going according to your plan?
