1 Samuel 15:24 ESV | Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.”

OBJECTIVE

Realizing that true obedience to God is rooted in love rather than fear or obligation, and the example of King Saul reminds us that partial obedience is still disobedience.

CONTENT

Obedience That Flows From Love, Not Fear

  • 1 John 5:3 doesn't present obedience as a burden to endure, it defines obedience as love. When we obey God, we are not simply checking a box on a spiritual to-do list. We are responding to a relationship, the way a child obeys a parent they trust and love, not because they're forced to, but because they don't want to disappoint someone who loves them.
  • Obedience driven mainly by fear only works as long as the fear stays strong enough to control us. The moment that fear fades, whether because the consequence feels distant, or something else becomes more frightening, the obedience built on it will fade too. Obedience without roots will easily shake because it was never rooted to anything deeper than fear of consequences. Saul's story later in this passage shows exactly this pattern.
  • On the other hand, love-based obedience is sustainable. Why is that? Because love-based obedience is rooted in relationship. It holds steady even when no one is watching, and even when it is costly. It doesn't need constant pressure to keep going, because the motivation comes from the heart, it is out of joy from our relationship with God.
  • Think of the difference between someone who slows down only when they see a police car, and someone who drives carefully because they genuinely care about others' safety. Both may follow the same rule, but only one will keep following it when no one's watching. That's what makes love-based obedience durable for the long run. It isn't driven up by pressure, it's carried by love.

Partial Obedience Is Still Disobedience

  • In 1 Samuel 15, God gave Saul a clear and specific instruction through prophet Samuel, which was to completely destroy the Amalekites, a nation that had attacked Israel generations earlier when they were weak and defenseless. Nothing was to be spared. But Saul didn't fully comply. He killed the Amalekite people, yet spared their king, Agag, and kept the best of the sheep, cattle, and anything else valuable, destroying only what was worthless. God had clearly told him to destroy everything they had, yet Saul obeyed selectively.
  • On the surface, it might have looked like Saul obeyed. After all, he did follow most of the command, right? But partial obedience is still, at its core, disobedience. Because it places our own judgment above God's instruction. Saul's actions reveal a heart that wanted to look faithful without actually being faithful.
  • When Samuel confronted Saul, Saul insisted he had obeyed. He even claimed the spared livestock was meant for a sacrifice to God. Samuel's response cut straight through the excuse: obeying God matters more than offering Him sacrifices. In other words, Saul couldn't buy back his disobedience by dressing it up as worship. Then, in 1 Samuel 15:24, Saul admits that he obeyed the voice of the people because he feared them. This means Saul cared more about pleasing people than pleasing God.
  • Saul's story is a warning for all of us. When we obey mainly to please people or avoid discomfort, that obedience won't hold. Because people's opinions keep changing, and so will our obedience along with them. But love for God is different. It keeps us faithful even when obeying is inconvenient, looked down on, or costly. That's the real invitation in this story: to obey not out of fear, but out of love. When our hearts are planted in that love, we become far less likely to compromise the way Saul did.

CONCLUSION

Saul’s story leaves us with an uncomfortable but important question, “Are we obeying God out of love, or out of fear of what others will think?” It’s possible to look faithful on the outside, following most of what God asks, while quietly holding back the parts that cost us something (whether that’s comfort, reputation, or relationships). God is looking for hearts that can fully obey because we love Him, not because we’re managing appearances on the surface. The good news is that love-based obedience isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being honest with God, and choosing love over fear, again and again.
