John 13:34  ESV | A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

John 15:12-13 ESV |  This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Romans 5:8 ESV | but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

OBJECTIVE

Knowing that we are called to love one another like Jesus does, and how we can use the five love languages to show love effectively to those around us.

CONTENT

Why We Love

  • When Jesus talks about love, He's not talking about a feeling that comes and goes. As John 13:34 says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you.” He calls it a commandment. This isn't something we feel our way into. It's a command to imitate the love we've already received. Real, genuine love comes from God. We're only able to love Him, or anyone else, because He loved us first. We don’t generate love on our own, we simply pass on what's already been given to us.
  • The standard of love is Christ Himself. John 15:12 says, “…to love another as I have loved you.” This means our love for others can't be based on how we feel about them, or whether they deserve it. Jesus has set a perfect example for us. He loved us sacrificially, patiently, and on purpose. Our standard of love is not the world's standard of tolerance, it is the selfless love of Jesus.

The Price of Love

  • John 15:13 pushes the standard even further, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus said this shortly before He went to the cross. This tells us something uncomfortable about biblical love: it’s costly. Real love gives something up (time, comfort, pride, convenience) for someone else’s good. If our love never costs us anything, it's worth asking whether what we're calling love is actually love, or just affection that only survives as long as it's easy.
  • This is why the cross is the clearest picture we have of what love actually looks like. Jesus didn't just teach sacrificial love, He carried it out, to the point of death. He gave up glory, comfort, and His own life for people who hadn't earned it. That's the ultimate example of love. Not a feeling, but a choice to lay everything down for someone else's sake. This is what separates His love from ours. It was never a response to our goodness. It was a choice, made first, at great cost, before we ever gave Him any reason to.

How We Love (The Five Love Languages)

  • Knowing how to love someone in a way they actually feel loved is another matter entirely. This is where the five love languages (popularized by Dr. Gary Chapman) can be a helpful, practical tool. The idea is simple: people tend to give and receive love differently. What makes one person feel loved might not be the same way for someone else.
  • Loving like Jesus means being willing to love in a language that isn't naturally yours, because love, at its core, is others-focused, not self-focused. The five love languages are:

    1. Words of Affirmation: expressing love through spoken or written encouragement, appreciation, and kind words. Practical example: Sending a cell member a text telling them specifically what you appreciate about them, or affirming them out loud in front of the group.
    2. Quality Time: giving someone your undivided, focused attention.
    Practical example: Grabbing a meal with a cell member one-on-one, without your phone, just to hear how they're really doing in life.
    3. Acts of Service: doing something helpful for someone as an expression of love.
    Practical example: Helping a cell member move, offering to pray with them right then and there, or helping them prep for something stressful.
    4. Gifts: giving a thoughtful, tangible token of love. Not about the cost, but the thought behind it.
    Practical example: Bringing someone's favorite snack when you know they've had a hard week.
    5. Physical Touch: appropriate physical gestures (a hug, a pat on the shoulder, a handshake) that communicate warmth and care.
    Practical example: A warm hug for a friend in the cell group, especially if they've been going through something hard.

CONCLUSION

The Bible gives us the why: we love because Christ first loved us, and His love was sacrificial, intentional, and others-centered. The love languages give us a how: a practical way to make sure the love we’re extending is actually felt by the person receiving it. Loving one another the way Jesus commanded isn’t just about having warm feelings toward the people in our cell group. It’s about paying attention, noticing how the people around us feel loved, and being willing to love them in that way, even if it costs us something.
