OBJECTIVE
To see the Holy Spirit as our personal agent of transformation and evangelization as believers.
To understand that obedience under the Holy Spirit’s lead is key to unlocking God’s mission for our lives.
CONTENT
Rather than just a distant force, the Holy Spirit is an active and present guide with whom we can come into close fellowship. He gives us boldness and confidence, strengthens us in our weaknesses, and activates our calling for impactful living. Yet, this empowerment goes beyond personal gain. Building intimacy with the Holy Spirit is the foundation for becoming an effective witness of Christ.
From Calling to Capacity
- The Greek word in reference to the Holy Spirit is Parakletos, which means one who is called alongside to aid, or simply the Helper. Other translations include the Counselor, Advocate, Comforter, and Intercessor. At His core, the Spirit of truth takes on an all-encompassing role of meeting every human need so that eventually, we become well-equipped to bear witness to His Word before an unbelieving world (John 14:17).
- The way to experience life transformation is through inviting the Helper to move freely in our everyday life. Through Christ, we have been liberated from spiritual death, such that we can now boldly live out of this freedom (2 Cor. 3:17). Yet, this implies that we get real and personal with our constant Companion. We ought to make room for Him to search the depths of our hearts (1 Cor. 2:10) and let His presence fill us up. As He convicts us of our sins, guides us to all truth (John 16:13), and reveals our godly assignments, we gain access to an intimacy that surpasses all understanding, empowering us to bear the virtues of Christ’s Spirit regardless of difficult circumstances or unmet needs.
From Empowerment to Impact
- God has always had a generational and global mission (Matt. 28:19-20) in mind. Therefore, the Holy Spirit’s work was never meant to end with us. Our process of transformation equips us in ways that further facilitate His work among the lives around us, ensuring Christ’s message doesn’t just fall on shallow ears, but takes root in the hearts of those who receive it (John 15:26).
- Following in Jesus’ footsteps comes with supernatural tasks that, when taken without the Holy Spirit’s involvement, will surely result in burnout and confusion. Real growth doesn’t happen through strife. Rather, it is through the Strengthener that we multiply in our spiritual, intellectual, and physical capacities, such that we can walk in the teachings of Christ with divine authority (Luke 12:12).
- While we’re all endowed with different gifts of the Holy Spirit, what pleases God isn’t our impressive feats, but our willingness to yield to the Spirit’s direction. As people of faith, it is to our advantage that we have the Comforter at all times to encourage and support us, even when we neither have the words for our sufferings (Rom. 8:26). As a result of His work within us, our faith matures with ever-increasing glory, enabling us to undergo trials and persecutions on behalf of the kingdom. Ultimately, His advocacy changes lives and conforms our conduct and character into Christ’s full image (2 Cor. 3:18).
