W3 | Dependency

REFERENCE BIBLE VERSES

‭‭

John 15:4-5 (ESV) | Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Philippians 4:11-13 (ESV) | Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

OBJECTIVE

To understand that bearing fruit and making an impact depends wholly on God

To understand that maturity comes from recognizing that Jesus is the source of our sufficiency

CONTENT

Dependency is often seen as a weakness. We live in a world that praises independence — people who are self-sufficient, who build things on their own, who need no one. Yet in John 15, Jesus deliberately uses the image of a vine and its branches to show us that depending on Him is not weakness — it is how we were designed to live. A branch cannot bear fruit on its own. Only a branch that remains connected to the vine will produce fruit. When the branch is not connected to the vine, it will wither and Jesus makes the stakes clear: those who do not abide in Him are like withered branches; cut off and thrown into the fire.
